Confinement myth - No salt in the diet? Do not drink plain water?

It is recommended to have a low sodium diet during confinement. It is not necessary to omit salt completely.

 

Within a month after childbirth, the body will remove the excess body fluids naturally. And this is the best time for mums to lose weight fast. If she increases her salt intake now, the water will be easily retained. This will cause burden to the kidney and other organs. There is no restriction on the amount of plain water new mums can consume.

 

During pregnancy, the enlarged uterus presses the lower limbs to cause venous return. It is easy to develop lower limb edema, which will normally disappear after childbirth. A new mum may refuse to drink water thinking it will cause her to have a bloated stomach and body edema. In contrary, it is important to keep the body rehydrated. It is recommended for lactating women to have at least 2500cc of liquid and a balanced diet that is rich in dietary fiber and drinks with high protein content including soup, soybean milk or milk. All these will help the physical recovery of postpartum mums, stimulate the production of breastmilk, increase metabolism and the bowel movement to prevent constipation.
