Postpartum Depression

What causes postpartum depression?

The cause of postpartum depression is still unknown. It could be associated with biological, psychological, and social factors. E.g. stressful major life events during the perinatal period, exhaustion, or major mental and physical trauma during labour. All these could lead to postpartum depression. Also, mothers often have to bear responsibility for their newborn and changes in a new mother's physical appearance may change. These may result in depression as well.

Postpartum depression

We recommend mothers to do a simple evaluation by asking the following questions:

  1. In the past month, were you often in a bad mood, depressed, or feel that there is no hope in the future?

  2. In the past month, did you often lose interest or find no pleasure in things?

If you have answered 'yes' to both questions, we strongly suggest you should tell your spouse about it or seek help from family and friends. You may also contact the mental health organizations for counseling or referral. At the same time, inform your O&G specialist, family physician, or pediatrician on your current conditions. Get a proper diagnosis, consultation, or medication by a psychiatrist when necessary. If the thought of hurting yourself often appears, seek medical help immediately to prevent any harm to yourself or your family.
