How to Breastfeed

Every parent wants the best for their baby and it is important to start right. Breast milk is the perfect nourishment for your baby.

  1. Wash your hands before each feed.

  2. Take a comfortable position: no one correct position for breastfeeding, try different positions and find a position that work well for you and your baby. It is easier to lactate if you are joyous.

  3. Mother and baby should maintain close contact: Regardless of which side you hold your baby, his or her abdomen should press closely to yours. His or her head and both shoulders should face your breasts with his or her upper lips touching your nipple. Keep his or her head straight, in line with his or her body.

  4. Suckling: Your baby's mouth holds the areola with his or her mouth open wide. His or her lower lip should turns outward in contact with the breast. When your baby suckles you should be able to see your baby swallow.

  5. Correct hand position for mothers during breastfeeding: With your fingers forming a "C" shape, your thumb should on the top and the rest at the bottom to serve as support for  your breast. Do not touch the areola.
